Environmental supply chain issues are attracting governmental attention.

The nation's supply chains could become greener through work being planned by the government, it has emerged.

Supply chain magazine Logistics Manager reports the creation of the Low Carbon Supply Chain Stakeholder Group by the Department for Transport.

Transport minister Paul Clark tells the publication: "This is a critical first step towards the development of a low-carbon logistics transport supply chain."

Operators within the supply chain industry itself are due to work with the group to help raise standards in emissions reporting.

Mr Clark explains that a "standardised and clear approach" to measuring and reporting carbon production in supply chains is desired.

He tells the supply chain magazine that around 30 per cent of the nation's emissions are generated through logistics and freight movements.

Logistics Manager previously reported plans by Volvo Trucks to achieve a 20 per cent reduction in its own carbon emissions by 2010 due to transport to and from its factories in Europe.
