It is vital to consider supply chain issues when attempting to combat counterfeiting, it is claimed.

Supply chain issues play a vital role in combating counterfeit goods - particularly where packaging is concerned - it has been claimed.

Manufacturing & Logistics IT reports that packaging is an often-neglected element in supply chain issues.

But it adds that this is an area where counterfeiting can be targeted and prevented using technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID.

The supply chain magazine explains that RFID can help to identify goods without introducing the delays associated with reading two-dimensional tags such as barcodes.

Readers are told: "Tracking technologies can be used in conjunction with packaging to allow manufacturers to trace legitimate products."

Manufacturing & Logistics IT previously noted that June and July are peak times for companies to devise their annual strategies for the coming year.

Issues which must be taken into account for an effective strategy include cargo insurance, route changes, port delays and pirates, the supply chain magazine added.
