IT supply chain 'should be greener'

Supply chain magazine Supply Management reports Global Action Plan's calls for greener government procurement of IT.
IT procurement should be made greener as a government priority, according to reports in one supply chain magazine.
Supply Management notes research from Global Action Plan (GAP) which reveals that most buyers in the public sector base their purchases solely on the initial financial outlay involved.
However, the organisation recommends the prioritisation of "eco-design" in purchased goods, helping to lower total cost of ownership due to power consumption and cooling costs.
GAP urges the government to pull its "procurement weight" in preferring energy-efficient options and preventing hazardous materials from being carelessly disposed of, the supply chain magazine adds.
One way in which this could be done is through the use of local suppliers, to reduce the environmental supply chain issues associated with long-distance transportation of goods.
In another recent report, local conception and delivery of projects was among GAP's recommendations of how carbon emissions can be reduced during eco-conscious expansion and improvement of public services.
