Pharma compliance can be aided through adoption of RFID technologies.

A pharma firm is using RFID technology to help meet compliance requirements, IBM reveals.

The IT organisation has published research showing the different ways in which RFID is being adopted by firms around the world.

One example given is that of Golden State Medical Supply (GSMS), a pharma manufacturer in Camarillo, California.

Chief executive officer Jim Stroud tells IBM: "Product safety is a business imperative for us.

"When faced with new regulations around pharmaceutical drug tracking, we saw an opportunity to innovate."

The firm achieved this by collaborating with IBM to develop an RFID tagging and tracking system for its shipments.

IBM previously revealed that the RFID scheme has allowed GSMS to prepare in advance for the compliance requirements which are due to come into effect in California in 2015.

The IT firm added that the partnership proves that it is possible to effectively implement an electronic pedigree programme on a small to mid-size level for more modestly sized pharma firms.
