Supply chain security need 'unquestionable'
23/07/2009
There is an "unquestionable" need for security in supply chains.
A new guide that aims to improve supply chain security has been launched by the World Bank.
Explaining the main aspects of supply chain security, the guide also highlights a number of issues that followed the publication of the 2005 World Customs Organisation framework.
According to the World Bank many of those involved with supply chain issues found responses to the framework, including a number of new initiatives, complex and confusing.
The World Bank's transport sector manager Mark Juhel said: "While the need to tighten up the overall supply chain security - from producer to consumer - is unquestionable, there are concerns that certain components need to be handled with extra care."
Particular thought must be given to supply chain issues in developing countries, added Mr Juhel.
The World Bank is the umbrella body for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association.
Offering interest-free loans and grants to developing countries, the bank aims to invest in areas such as education, health and infrastructure.
