Govt wind targets 'are over-ambitious'

Targets for wind-generated power could be neglecting investment in other areas - such as overcoming supply chain issues in tidal generation.

The government's targets for wind power are "over-ambitious", according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

Deputy director general John Cridland explains that the government's focus on wind power for the future of renewable energy could "crowd out" investment in other formats.

His comments follow observations from Gurit UK, a supplier of composite materials which recently warned about supply chain issues due to poor investment in tidal power.

Commercial development manager Thomas Royle urged tidal energy developers to know their role in the industry in order to avoid encountering supply chain issues due to low levels of investment from clients.

Now Mr Cridland says: "There are six specific steps that we need taken in the next 12 to 18 months; they are very tangible steps."

He includes "investment in the grid" among these as the UK looks to prepare for an influx of energy from sources including both wind and tidal, as well as nuclear and gas.
