Logistex Awarded Wincanton/GSK Contract
FKI
Logistex (www.fkilogistex.com), a global leader in
automated materials handling solutions, has been awarded
the contract to extend a major site at Middlewich
(Cheshire, UK), from which Wincanton operates
GlaxoSmithKline’s northern distribution base. The
original Automated Storage and Retrieval System was
completed by FKI Logistex in 2005 as part of a 10 year,
third-party logistics (3PL) contract awarded to
Wincanton by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The latest contract
is for FKI Logistex to extend the original installation
of nine cranes, and a significant number of pallet
conveyors, with two additional automated cranes.
Wincanton’s Business Unit Director — Manufacturing,
Martin Sealy, explained: “The new contract recognizes
the contribution made by FKI Logistex to the efficient
operation of the existing site, which services the
Midlands, Northern England, Scotland and Ireland, with
its nutritional range of products. As a third-party
logistics supplier, we recognize the vital role that
automated materials handling plays in the success of the
long-term relationship between Wincanton and
GlaxoSmithKline.” Gerry Bonnar, Wincanton’s Contract
General Manager, added: “The initial installation was
designed with the provision for easy expansion and we
worked closely with FKI Logistex to ensure that we made
full use of the flexibility of their automated
materials-handling systems.”
