eLogistics Award for CHEP
CHEP has received the prestigious eLogistics Award from
AKJ Automotive, a leading association of automotive
manufacturers, first- and second-tier suppliers, at its
annual conference in Saarbrücken, Germany. CHEP received
the award for executing the largest cross-border rollout
of RFID tagged automotive containers in Europe.
According to the AKJ selection panel, “The
eLogistics prize is awarded for innovative logistics
concepts and solutions that are already used or are
about to be launched. The solutions should be linked to
product development, manufacturing, distribution and
appropriate disposal.
CHEP’s RFID initiative will provide
significant benefits to the automotive industry,
delivering control, cost savings and improving the
efficiency of the supply chain.
What makes the effort special and unique is that CHEP
delivered this application on a European scale and made
it work,” the panel concluded.
Working with its suppliers, Microsoft, Infosys and RF
Identics, approximately 90% of the 150,000 CHEP FLCs in
circulation in Europe now carry an RFID tag. The purpose
of the project was to track the FLCs during four
critical phases of the supply chain: Issue Out, Return
In, Inspection and Repair. The resulting information
gathered from this exercise allows CHEP to perform
variance analysis on the FLC damage rate and slow moving
containers, which will lead to logistics efficiencies
and cost reductions for its customers. Rainer Sandow,
Vice President, CHEP Automotive, Europe commented: “To
offer our customers the much anticipated benefits
regarding the tracking of automotive parts and
components, we wish to first prove to the market that
CHEP is capable of a mass cross-border rollout of an
RFID Track and Trace application and infrastructure. We
are now able to build on the success of this project to
expand our RFID-related service offerings to our
customers”. Previous winners of this award include
DaimlerChrysler, RailCargo Austria and Volkswagen.
